The Hassle of Ownership - Quarter of Motorists Hate Getting Their Cars Serviced - But There Is an Easier Way!

Time is precious. And travel is a pain, especially if you have to do it without your car. And for many motorists, these are often the first thoughts that enter their heads when the time comes to repair, service, or MOT their faithful metal steeds. Ironic, really, because the more diligently you maintain a car, the less time it may need in a garage, and the more it can keep you mobile.

Nonetheless, it is a chore. And you can’t be blamed for thinking like this - in fact, you wouldn’t be alone, according to new research from the RAC. Apparently, more than a quarter of UK drivers (27%) say they find car maintenance a real “hassle”. From costly repairs to inconvenient booking systems, it’s no wonder that many simply put it off - despite the obvious dangers of doing so.

Believe it or not, nearly a third (30%) of motorists admitted to delaying repairs or servicing, which of course, leads to a ticking time bomb of mechanical issues.

What’s Stopping Drivers from Maintaining Their Cars?

The RAC’s survey of over 1,400 drivers revealed that:

  • 68% of drivers said that the time involved in getting to and from the garage was a pain. 22% depended on friends and family for a lift, 10% used public transport, and 4% had to pay for a cab!
  • This beat the annoyance of being without a car (47%).
  • Not knowing how long the car would be out of action was another major bugbear at 42%.
  • Meanwhile, 28% admitted to delaying work due to the cost.
  • Owners were also concerned about garages finding more problems to fix when a car was in for service (this happened to 28%).
  • 35% of drivers have to travel five miles or more to a garage (rising to as high as 48% if you live in a rural location). As many as 7% of drivers have to travel over 20 miles to their preferred garage, accounting for a staggering 2.4 million car owners!

Cost is a big issue too. Nearly half (45%) of respondents said they’ve skipped taking their car to a professional mechanic entirely when funds were tight. This demonstrates a wider problem: for many drivers today, keeping a car roadworthy feels inconvenient, expensive, and confusing.

“Skipping repairs, or delaying or even cancelling planned servicing, is a false economy - you’ll always end up with a bigger bill down the line. And a car that’s not been looked after and has a patchy service history is worth less and is harder to sell on in the future,” warned RAC Chief Executive Paul Coward.

No More Missed Services, No More MOT Panic

MotorEasy even keeps you informed with alerts and reminders so you don’t forget when your next service or MOT is due. You can access all your car details and history via your online dashboard, helping you stay in control without worrying about losing the paperwork.

The findings from the RAC are a clear warning: drivers are overwhelmed, and traditional repair routes are adding to the pressure. If people are ignoring warning lights or driving around after an MOT fail, the system needs rethinking.

Garages need to look into better, more conducive ways to serve their customers, from online services to pick-up and drop-off services.
